Disabled BadgeThe friendly Blue Badge guide

Where you can and cannot park with a Blue Badge

A Blue Badge opens up some parking, but not everywhere. Here is the clear picture.

In short

With a Blue Badge you can usually park free and without time limit in disabled bays on the street, on single and double yellow lines for up to three hours in England and Wales (where there is no loading ban), and often free at on-street parking meters and pay-and-display bays. You cannot park where there is a loading restriction, in bus or cycle lanes, or anywhere that would cause an obstruction. Always check the local signs, as councils set their own rules.

The single most useful habit with a Blue Badge is to read the signs at the spot you are in. The badge gives you concessions, but local rules vary, and the signs always win.

Where you can usually park

  • In on-street disabled parking bays, usually free and without a time limit.
  • On single and double yellow lines for up to three hours (England and Wales), as long as there is no loading ban and you are not causing an obstruction. [CONFIRM] Scotland and Northern Ireland rules.
  • At on-street pay-and-display machines and parking meters, often free, though some areas differ.

Where you cannot park

  • Where there is a loading or unloading restriction (look for kerb markings and signs).
  • In bus lanes during their hours of operation, and in cycle lanes.
  • On zig-zag lines near crossings and schools.
  • Anywhere you would cause an obstruction or a danger, including blocking dropped kerbs.
  • In many private and supermarket car parks, the badge does not give the same rights, see car parks and private land.

The badge is not a free pass

A Blue Badge does not let you park dangerously or cause an obstruction, and it does not override loading bans or red routes. When in doubt, find a safer, clearly permitted spot.

When you do park on yellow lines

You usually need to display the badge and the time clock set to your arrival time. See using the time clock.

Frequently asked questions

Can I park on double yellow lines with a Blue Badge?

In England and Wales, usually for up to three hours where there is no loading restriction and you are not causing an obstruction. Always check the signs and kerb markings.

Is parking always free with a Blue Badge?

Often on-street, but not always, and not usually in private car parks. Local rules vary, so check the signs and any car park terms.

Can I park anywhere if I am quick?

No. The badge does not allow parking on loading bans, red routes, bus lanes, or anywhere causing an obstruction, however briefly.
