Disabled BadgeThe friendly Blue Badge guide

On-street parking, car parks and private land

The street and the supermarket car park are not the same. Here is why it matters.

In short

Blue Badge concessions are set by councils and apply to on-street parking. In private and supermarket car parks, the operator sets the rules, and the badge does not automatically give you free parking or extra time. Always read the car park signs: many give disabled bays and sometimes free or extended parking, but you usually need to follow their conditions, such as displaying the badge or registering your stay.

This is one of the easiest things to get caught out by. People assume the badge works the same everywhere. On the street it follows the council's rules. The moment you drive onto private land, the landowner's rules apply instead.

On-street parking

Here the council's Blue Badge concessions apply: free parking in disabled bays, the yellow-line concession, and often free pay-and-display. See where you can park.

Private and supermarket car parks

  • The operator decides whether badge holders park free, and for how long.
  • Many offer disabled bays and a grace period, but you may still need to display the badge or enter your registration.
  • Some use cameras and issue parking charges if you overstay, even in a disabled bay.

Read the sign, every time

Before you leave the car in a private car park, read the terms on the sign. If it says a maximum stay applies to all vehicles, that usually includes badge holders unless it clearly says otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

Is Blue Badge parking free at supermarkets?

Not automatically. The car park operator sets the rules. Many give disabled bays and some free time, but always check the signs and any need to display the badge or register.

Can I get a parking charge in a disabled bay?

Yes, on private land, if you overstay or do not meet the operator's conditions. The Blue Badge concessions do not override private car park terms.
