Your responsibilities as a Blue Badge holder
A few simple responsibilities keep your badge valid and trouble-free.
In short
As a Blue Badge holder you must only use the badge for journeys where you are travelling or being dropped off or collected, display it correctly, never let others use it for their own parking, never alter it, return it when it expires or is no longer needed, and tell your council if your details change. The badge always remains the property of the issuing council.
What is expected of you
- Only use the badge when you are in the vehicle, or being dropped off or collected.
- Display the badge and time clock correctly. See using the time clock.
- Never let anyone use your badge to park for their own benefit when you are not with them.
- Never alter, copy or tamper with the badge.
- Keep your details up to date with the council, and return the badge when it expires or you no longer need it.
Why this matters
Following these responsibilities is not just box-ticking. Misuse, even when accidental, can lead to losing the badge and, in some cases, a criminal penalty. Our guide on what counts as misuse explains where the line is, calmly and without judgement.
Frequently asked questions
Do I own my Blue Badge?
No. The badge remains the property of the council that issued it, and must be returned when it expires or is no longer needed.
What happens if I do not follow the rules?
You could lose the badge, and serious or dishonest misuse can lead to a fine or prosecution. Most issues, though, come from not knowing the rules, which is what these guides are here to fix.
