Disabled BadgeThe friendly Blue Badge guide

Who qualifies for a Blue Badge automatically

If you receive certain benefits, you may qualify for a Blue Badge automatically, with no assessment needed.

In short

You qualify for a Blue Badge automatically (without further assessment) if you are registered blind, or you receive certain benefits at a certain level. These include the higher rate of the Disability Living Allowance mobility component, a Personal Independence Payment with 8 or more points for 'moving around', 10 points for the 'planning and following journeys' descriptor relating to overwhelming psychological distress, the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement, or an Armed Forces compensation award within set tariff levels.

There are two ways to get a Blue Badge: automatically, or after an assessment. This page covers the automatic route. If you receive one of the benefits below, you are described as eligible without further assessment, which usually makes the application simpler and quicker.

You qualify automatically if you (aged 3 or over)

  • are registered blind (severely sight impaired);
  • receive the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA);
  • receive a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and scored 8 points or more under the 'moving around' activity, because you cannot walk more than 50 metres;
  • receive the mobility component of PIP and scored 10 points for descriptor E under 'planning and following journeys', on the basis that you cannot undertake any journey because it would cause you overwhelming psychological distress;
  • receive the War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement;
  • have received a lump sum benefit within tariff levels 1 to 8 of the Armed Forces and Reserve Forces Compensation Scheme, and have been certified as having a permanent and substantial disability causing inability to walk or very considerable difficulty walking.

Check your award letter

Your PIP or DLA decision letter shows the rate and the points awarded. It is the quickest way to see whether you qualify automatically. Keep it handy, as you will usually need it as evidence when you apply.

What if I do not qualify automatically?

Plenty of people who do not tick any of the boxes above still get a Blue Badge after an assessment of how their condition affects them. That is the discretionary route, and it is just as valid. See our guide on discretionary eligibility and how it is assessed.

Ready to apply?

Apply through the official service for your nation. It is free to apply, even though the badge itself has a small cost in most of the UK.

Frequently asked questions

Does getting PIP mean I automatically get a Blue Badge?

Not on its own. It depends on the points and component. 8+ points for 'moving around', or 10 points for the journeys descriptor about overwhelming psychological distress, qualify you automatically. Other PIP awards may still qualify you through an assessment.

I am registered blind. Do I qualify?

Yes. Being registered blind (severely sight impaired) is one of the automatic qualifying criteria.

Do I still need to apply if I qualify automatically?

Yes. Qualifying automatically means you do not need a separate mobility assessment, but you still apply to your council and provide proof of your benefit.
